Privacy policy
This policy explains what personal information this website handles, why, and what you can do about it. It is written to meet Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and, for visitors in the European Union or the United Kingdom, the GDPR.
1. Who is responsible
This website, https://torstenyoung.com, is run by Torsten Young (Kingston, Ontario, Canada), who is accountable for the personal information handled through it.
For anything about privacy, including the requests in section 6, write to contact@torstenyoung.com.
2. What is collected, why, and for how long
| Information | Why | Legal basis | Kept for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Server logs: IP address, browser type, page requested, date and time | To deliver the site and keep it secure | Necessary to run the site (PIPEDA: implied consent; GDPR: legitimate interests, Art. 6(1)(f)) | Deleted by the host after a short period, normally within 30 days |
| Preferences stored in your browser: language and motion setting | To remember your choices | Strictly necessary | Until you clear your browser storage. Never sent anywhere |
| Connection data sent to an embedded project website (IP address, browser type, referring page) when you press Continue on its live preview | To show the project as it really works | Your consent (Art. 6(1)(a)), given by pressing Continue | Set by that website; see its own policy |
| Emails you send | To reply to you | Your consent (Art. 6(1)(a)) | Deleted once the conversation is finished, and within 24 months at most |
Statistics. This site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, a cookieless statistics service that counts visits without identifying you or following you across sites.
3. What this site does not do
No accounts, no forms, no advertising, no tracking cookies, and no selling, renting or sharing of personal information. All fonts, scripts and 3D graphics are served from this website itself, so loading a page does not contact any other company, unless you choose to load another website’s live preview on a project page (see section 4).
4. Other parties
- Hosting. The site is served by Cloudflare, Inc., which processes server logs on the site’s behalf. Its servers may be outside Canada, so this information may be subject to the laws of that country.
- Live project previews. Some project pages can show the real website of that project inside a window on the page. Nothing from that website loads until you press Continue on that window. Then your browser connects to it directly: it receives your IP address, browser type and the fact that you viewed it (with this site as the referring address), and it may set its own cookies or storage. That website’s own privacy and cookie policies apply. Websites that can be shown this way: photos.torstenyoung.com.
- Links. Links to other websites open in a new tab. Their own privacy policies apply.
- Content shown on this site (GitHub activity, map locations) is fetched by the build server when the site is published, not by your browser. No information about visitors is sent to those services.
- Exercise totals come from a summary of my own Strava export that I import myself. Only weekly distances are published, and visitors’ browsers never contact Strava.
5. How it is protected
The site is served only over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), and it collects as little as possible: there is almost nothing to protect.
6. Your rights
You can ask to see the personal information held about you, have it corrected or deleted, and withdraw consent you have given. If you are in the EU or UK you can also ask to restrict or object to its use and to receive a copy in a portable format. Write to contact@torstenyoung.com. We aim to provide a reply within 30 days.
7. Complaints
Please get in touch first so the problem can be fixed. You can also complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, or, in the EU or UK, to your local data protection authority.
8. Children
This site is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their information.
9. Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top of the page changes with it.
